HELLO, VALLE DE GUADALUPE!
If you live in Southern California, that makes Valle de Guadalupe the perfect little weekend getaway. Fall in love with Mexico’s wine region, it will surely become one of your favorite local getaways.
Located just an hour and a half from the San Diego border, Valle de Guadalupe is not only the perfect destination for a weekend escape, but it’s also one of the most unique wine regions you’ll ever travel through. From the innovative designs to picturesque views and award winning wines, Valle de Guadalupe is the perfect juxtaposition of modern and traditional: innovative ideas and trendy designs, combined with those addicting laid-back Baja vibes.
Most of the wineries are located pretty far off the main road and some are hard to find. It’s not like in Temecula where you can window shop and then pull into the one that looks the coolest. It’s a good idea to plan your itinerary in advance to make the most of your trip.
For first timers, we definitely suggest taking a Wine Tour. @AnsellWineTours offers a great experience that we would definitely recommend, everyone speaks perfect English, so you won’t have to deal with any language barrier issues.
Almost everyone at the wineries speaks great English and they are used to tourists. Some of the more local restaurants don’t speak much English, but everyone is always accommodating to anyone with limited Spanish.
As always, learning a few key phrases in the local language can go a long way. There are over 150 different wineries in Valle de Guadalupe and one of our favorite things about this region is just how different each one is. They all have their own personalities that go from traditionally beautiful to quirky & trendy, so there is something for everyone.
The oldest and one of the most popular wineries is Monte Xanic, which has been producing wine in Baja for over 20 years. They’ve won over 250 awards and their property is stunning, so if you’re looking to taste great wine with amazing views, this is a good place to start.
Some of our favorites are Vena Cava, a uniquely designed winery made out of recycled boats, a hipster paradise with wine and food; Finca La Carodilla, the first certified organic winery in the Valle (with the prettiest patio); and Hacienda.
La Lomita, who have some of the best wines.
